Cet ouvrage construit entre 1907 et 1909 a \u00e9t\u00e9 mis en service en 1910. Depuis 109 ans, il r\u00e9gule le d\u00e9bit d\u2019eau de la rivi\u00e8re des Outaouais et stabilise le niveau d\u2019eau en amont entre Ottawa et Arnprior.<\/span>\n\t<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>[vc_empty_space height=\u00a0\u00bb40px\u00a0\u00bb][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div class=\"qodef-post-content\">\n<div class=\"qodef-post-text\">\n<div class=\"qodef-post-text-inner\">\n<div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid qodef-section qodef-content-aligment-left\">\n<div class=\"clearfix qodef-full-section-inner\">\n<div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\">\n<div class=\"vc_column-inner\">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>Tout au long des ann\u00e9es 1800, avant la construction du barrage-vo\u00fbte, les propri\u00e9taires de diff\u00e9rentes entreprises \u00e9tablies sur les rives et dans les \u00eeles autour des chutes am\u00e9nagent plusieurs digues et petits barrages. Ces petits ouvrages leur permettent d\u2019acheminer l\u2019eau vers leurs \u00e9quipements et leurs turbines, surtout en automne et en hiver, alors que le courant est beaucoup plus faible qu\u2019au printemps. Bien entendu, ces ouvrages sont \u00e0 l\u2019origine de nombreux diff\u00e9rends entre leurs utilisateurs. Avec l\u2019av\u00e8nement de l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9, la concurrence devient encore plus f\u00e9roce. En 1905, des propri\u00e9taires et des locataires unissent leurs efforts pour construire un barrage unique au b\u00e9n\u00e9fice de tous. Puis, en 1907, les gouvernements de l\u2019Ontario et du Qu\u00e9bec concluent une entente en vertu de laquelle ils se partagent en parts \u00e9gales les droits du potentiel hydro\u00e9lectrique du barrage de la Chaudi\u00e8re, la production d\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 de l\u2019ouvrage ainsi que son co\u00fbt, son entretien et son exploitation. Le barrage-vo\u00fbte de la Chaudi\u00e8re devient ainsi la premi\u00e8re installation hydro\u00e9lectrique sur la rivi\u00e8re des Outaouais. Comme la fili\u00e8re hydro\u00e9lectrique repr\u00e9sente aujourd\u2019hui 61 % de la production d\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 au Canada, la rivi\u00e8re des Outaouais et le barrage-vo\u00fbte aux <a href=\"http:\/\/chuteschaudiere.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chutes de la Chaudi\u00e8re<\/a> occupent une place pr\u00e9pond\u00e9rante dans l\u2019histoire. Ainsi, au moment de sa mise en service, les deux gouvernements ont des op\u00e9rateurs charg\u00e9s de surveiller l\u2019ouvrage. Tout d\u2019abord r\u00e9partie \u00e9galement entre les deux provinces, la participation fluctue au fil des ans, au gr\u00e9 des diverses ventes et acquisitions. En 2016, alors qu\u2019elle d\u00e9tient une participation de 67 % dans le barrage-vo\u00fbte, Hydro Ottawa annonce qu\u2019elle a conclu avec Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec un contrat d\u2019achat et de vente portant sur la participation restante de 33 % dans le barrage-vo\u00fbte. Cet ouvrage sert \u00e0 r\u00e9guler le d\u00e9bit d\u2019eau et non pas \u00e0 cr\u00e9er un r\u00e9servoir. La quantit\u00e9 d\u2019eau qui se d\u00e9verse par-dessus les billots est dict\u00e9e par le d\u00e9bit de la rivi\u00e8re. Elle est nulle en p\u00e9riode d\u2019\u00e9tiage, mais peut atteindre 5 500 m\u00e8tres cubes par seconde au printemps. Les premiers explorateurs fran\u00e7ais ont donn\u00e9 aux chutes le nom de \u00ab Chaudi\u00e8re \u00bb, qui signifiait \u00ab bouilloire \u00bb en ancien fran\u00e7ais et \u00e9tait une traduction de leur nom en langue anishinaabe, soit \u00ab asticou \u00bb. Le barrage-vo\u00fbte comporte 50 ouvertures munies de rainures retenant de gros billots \u00e9quarris. Pour stabiliser autant que possible le niveau d\u2019eau en amont, les op\u00e9rateurs posent ou enl\u00e8vent des billots dans ces ouvertures en utilisant trois treuils \u00e9lectriques plac\u00e9s sur la dalle sup\u00e9rieure. Cette m\u00e9thode est utilis\u00e9e depuis la mise en service de l\u2019ouvrage en 1910. Le barrage-vo\u00fbte est sous surveillance constante et dot\u00e9 en personnel en tout temps depuis le d\u00e9but, ce qui repr\u00e9sente pr\u00e8s de 94 000 heures d\u2019exploitation continue! Pour des raisons de s\u00e9curit\u00e9, le public n\u2019a pas acc\u00e8s \u00e0 l\u2019ouvrage.
