Plusieurs entreprises \u00e9taient autrefois en activit\u00e9 \u00e0 cet emplacement, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 la rivi\u00e8re Rideau se d\u00e9verse dans la rivi\u00e8re des Outaouais. La W.C. Edward\u2019s Company a fini par acqu\u00e9rir toutes les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s du secteur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>La centrale situ\u00e9e aux chutes Rideau a \u00e9t\u00e9 construite en 1908 apr\u00e8s la destruction de l\u2019ensemble des usines et des b\u00e2timents par un incendie en juillet 1907. La W.C. Edward\u2019s Company s\u2019est tourn\u00e9e vers l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 pour ses activit\u00e9s de fabrication. La centrale l\u2019a aliment\u00e9e en \u00e9lectricit\u00e9 jusque dans les ann\u00e9es 1920, apr\u00e8s quoi diverses entreprises ont occup\u00e9 le site. Le Conseil national de recherches a pris la rel\u00e8ve des activit\u00e9s en 1937 et entrepris de vastes travaux de remise en \u00e9tat de la centrale. En 1985, Rideau Falls Partnership et Granite Power Corporation ont remis \u00e0 niveau la centrale, qui a une puissance de 2,8 MW.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column Jones, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 am\u00e9nag\u00e9 dans les ann\u00e9es 1830, servait \u00e0 la r\u00e9gulation de la s\u00e9rie de rapides et de chutes de Jones Falls qui s\u2019\u00e9tendent sur une longueur d\u2019un mille (1,6 km). Avec une hauteur de pr\u00e8s de 60 pi (18,3 m), le grand barrage-vo\u00fbte \u00e9tait au moment de sa construction le barrage le plus haut en Am\u00e9rique du Nord. Il est construit de pierres verticales effil\u00e9es imbriqu\u00e9es.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"white\">En 1946, la Gananoque Light &#038; Power Company a entrepris l\u2019un de ses plus grands projets, soit la construction de la centrale de Jones Falls imm\u00e9diatement en aval du barrage. Apr\u00e8s avoir mis en service trois groupes turbine-alternateur en 1949, l\u2019entreprise en a ajout\u00e9 un quatri\u00e8me en 1956, portant ainsi \u00e0 1,8 M la puissance de la centrale.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row content_width=\u00a0\u00bbgrid\u00a0\u00bb css=\u00a0\u00bb.vc_custom_1553108876019{padding-top: 72px !important;padding-bottom: 57px !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}\u00a0\u00bb][vc_column offset=\u00a0\u00bbvc_col-md-5&Prime;][vc_column_text css=\u00a0\u00bb.vc_custom_1559135777195{padding-bottom: 15px !important;}\u00a0\u00bb]<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"font-big\">Washburn<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"lead-2\">Situ\u00e9e pr\u00e8s de l\u2019\u00e9cluse no 45 du canal Rideau \u00e0 Lower Brewers Mills, la centrale de Washburn a \u00e9t\u00e9 construite en 1942 par la Gananoque Light &#038; Power Company. Elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 am\u00e9nag\u00e9e sur les fondations d\u2019un ancien moulin \u00e0 provende qu\u2019avait reconstruit en 1861 James C. Foster. Une filature et un magasin de laine ainsi qu\u2019un \u00e9l\u00e9vateur d\u2019entreposage ont aussi d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 exploit\u00e9s \u00e0 cet emplacement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>La centrale a \u00e9t\u00e9 construite pour abriter une ancienne turbine retir\u00e9e de la centrale de Gananoque. Nombre d\u2019observateurs consid\u00e8rent que cette turbine fabriqu\u00e9e en 1893 est l\u2019une des plus anciennes en exploitation au Canada. La centrale de Washburn a ferm\u00e9 en 1972 pour des raisons \u00e9conomiques. Une subvention gouvernementale a permis de la remettre \u00e0 niveau en 1984 et de la red\u00e9marrer en 1985. Construite en 1939, la centrale compte trois groupes turbine-alternateur. Un quatri\u00e8me est pr\u00e9vu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"white\">TD\u2019une puissance de 0,6 MW, les groupes turbine-alternateur de la centrale demeurent en exploitation. Elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 construite en 1914, par la Gananoque Light &#038; Power, sur le site d\u2019un ancien moulin \u00e0 provende.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Encore en exploitation de nos jours, la centrale comptait \u00e0 l\u2019origine un seul groupe turbine-alternateur, le groupe no 1, qui \u00e9tait consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme la \u00ab b\u00eate de somme \u00bb de l\u2019entreprise. Company. \u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, on utilisait de la vapeur pour produire l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9. Au fil des ans, la ville a \u00e9t\u00e9 le th\u00e9\u00e2tre de plusieurs agrandissements des installations de production.
